Let’s start with the good news. The 49ers looked scary good again, rolling the Dolphins 35-13 behind Brock Purdy, who threw for 287 yards, two touchdowns, and a 149.1 passer rating. They’re 2-0, they’re humming on both sides of the ball, and right now they look like the best team in the league. I’ll take it.
Now let’s talk about the Bears. After they dropped 59 on Carolina in Week 1, Ben Johnson had people out here saying this was going to be one of the best offenses in NFL history. One week later they go to Soldier Field and score three points in a 9-3 loss to the Vikings. Three. That’s not a bad week, that’s a reality check. And to make it worse, Caleb Williams got carted off with a hamstring injury. Sounds scary, but by all accounts he’s considered week-to-week and it’s not the serious injury it looked like in the moment. Still, “best offense in history” lasted exactly seven days.
The Giants are the Giants again. Jaxson Dart goes down on New York’s very first offensive series of the game against the Rams, and it was pretty much over from there. Jameis Winston comes in and they get run out of the building 28-6 while Matthew Stafford throws four touchdowns for LA. Just when you think this franchise might be turning a corner, it finds a new way to remind you it’s still the Giants.
As bad as all that is, nothing tops what’s happening in Atlanta right now. The Falcons got run off their own field 34-3 by the Panthers, with three interceptions to go with it. That’s about as ugly as a loss gets, and it’s fair to wonder what’s actually going on with this team.
And then there’s Tampa Bay. How do you let the Browns beat you? The Bucs fell 23-19 at home to Cleveland and are sitting at 0-2. Say what you want about the Browns this year, but losing to them at home is a bad look no matter how you slice it.
