Well, it’s official. Nick Pivetta is a Padre. Four years, 55 million dollars, and San Diego just filled the one hole in this rotation everyone’s been talking about all offseason.
The structure of this deal is interesting too. Backloaded, with opt-outs after year two and year three. He gets a 3 million dollar signing bonus and only a million dollar salary this year, then it jumps to 19 million in 2026. That’s a front office trying to keep the payroll manageable this year while still landing a real piece for the rotation. Smart, honestly. That’s exactly the kind of deal I’d want to see if I were running things.
Pivetta comes over from Boston, where he turned down a qualifying offer worth over 21 million. 26 starts last year, a 4.14 ERA, and 172 strikeouts in under 146 innings. That strikeout number is what gets me. This guy misses bats. That’s a real weapon to add to a staff that already has some talent at the top.
And here’s the part I actually think matters most. This signing probably makes a Dylan Cease trade more likely before the season even starts. If Pivetta’s locking down a rotation spot, San Diego might have the depth to actually cash Cease in for something big. We’ll see if that happens, but keep an eye on it.
Good move. Good value. Let’s see what it does for this staff.
